Why Plagiarism is An Unacceptable Academic Practice

In all academic fields, once a student enrolls he/she is expected to gain as much as possible throughout the period that they will be in that institution. This includes developing a large pool of skills and knowledge that are applicable in a real-life situation. If a student does not acquire this and gain any competitive outcome, it is considered a failure, not only for the student but for the instructor as well. Universities and other learning institutions always issue out assignments and give directions on how they should be handled. They give clear instructions on how the assignment should be like without living out any bits. Among the rules, plagiarism is a big offense and no student should present plagiarized work.

What do you know about plagiarism?

What do you know about plagiarism? We are going to answer this question before finally embarking on showing why plagiarism is unacceptable in academic practice. This will be followed by various ways through which you can avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when a person takes another person's work and present it as their own. Such people do not acknowledge the original authors of the work that they are presenting. This is treated just the same way as stealing because you are using another person's work without their authorization or consent. Just like being found in possession of the stolen property, by copying a person's work, you are doing so illegally and you can be jailed for this behavior.

Why Plagiarism is An Unacceptable Academic Practice

Plagiarism is unacceptable in academic practice because it is considered as theft of knowledge. Stealing can be in different forms, it does not necessarily mean stealing properties such as motor vehicles, books, or such physical properties. It also includes stealing knowledge, which in this case is termed as plagiarism. When as a student you are given an assignment, the instructor expects you to relate what you have been taught in class and use additional information from books and other online sources such as journals and articles to complete the assignment. But when one goes to these sources and directly copies the answers and presents it as their work then this is unacceptable. To the instructor, you have not made any effort to do the work and therefore it appears like you have not gained anything in the coursework.

This is the sole reason why plagiarism is unacceptable, the behavior instills laziness in students such that they do not engage their brains but use other authors' pieces. They plagiarize not knowing that instructors have a way of knowing that they have cheated. Assignments should be done by the students in a bid to show if they have gained from the course being taught. Reading information from other secondary sources is not a bad vice most instructors encourage students to read more. The students are to read the different pieces and use the information gathered to answer the question. To ensure that the work is not plagiarized, they can embrace citations which acknowledges that the work is from a different author. Alternatively, they can avoid plagiarism by paraphrasing the copied content.
